Helping The Helpers
Muğla Forest Fires
As the Nirengi Association team, we quickly adapted the Helping the Helpers program to the context of forest fires in order to support the team members who were directly affected by the fire and who worked hard in the extinguishing efforts, to support their coping with the direct or secondary trauma they experienced after the disaster of forest fires that started on July 28, 2021.
On October 10-11-12, 2021, in cooperation with the Nirengi Association and the İhtiyaç Haritası, we transferred our Helping the Helpers/Psychosocial Support program with the logistics sponsorship of Borusan Group Companies to the teams of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Fire Brigade Department and Muğla Governorship Provincial Disaster and Emergency Directorate.
During the program, we visited Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department and Muğla Governorship Provincial Directorate of Disaster and Emergency Directorate.
90 first response team members (firefighters and search-rescuers) and team leaders who were directly involved in extinguishing forest fires in Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department and Muğla Governorship Provincial Disaster and Emergency Directorate participated in the three-day program.
📌 In the program as three modules; Trauma, Trauma Dynamics, Helpers and Coping Channels; Psychological First Aid / Psychosocial Support and Basic Messages Against Forest Fires are included.
📌 Needs analysis was carried out before the program, and after the program, monitoring and evaluation studies were carried out.

Elazığ Earthquake
On the evening of January 24, 2020, after the earthquake with 6.8 magnitude in Elazığ, subsequently, Nirengi Team went to Elazığ on 31 January 2020 for Needs Analysis on Educational Psychosocial Support and Aid to Helpers. During the 4-day actions, we held meetings with Elazığ Provincial Family, Labour and Social Services Directorate, Provincial Directorate of National Education and other stakeholders.
As Nirengi Team, we conveyed our program which is Helping the Helpers for Elazığ Earthquake to 160 Psychosocial Support field workers.
📌 We approached the topics of Understanding Trauma, The Principles of Psychological First Aid and Basic Disaster Awareness in education.
📌 We formed focus group discussions to evaluate the effects of training on field workers.
Helping The Helpers
1999 Marmara Earthquake
Right after Marmara Earthquake in 1999, we got rapidly organized with 90 of our colleagues. In coordination with various international organizations, we gave trainings in post-trauma management methods. In close cooperation with NGOs in the region, our team provided post-trauma rehabilitation services for around two years.
