PROJECT INFORMATION

BACKGROUND

We, as Nirengi Association team firmly believe that child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse and neglect, also leave deep, lasting scars.

The earlier abused children get help, the greater chance they have to heal and break the cycle—rather than perpetuate it. By learning about common signs of abuse and what you can do to intervene, you can make a huge difference in a child’s life as mentioned in the www.helpus.org. Additionally, we are aware of that the prevention of child abuse and or dealing with its deep impact strongly needs a coordinated and integrated multi-sectoral approach; specifically with leading public administration and judicial system.

CHILD NEGLECT and ABUSE DEFINITIONS

NEGLECT

Any act or failure of parents and caregivers to provide basic needs like necessary food, clothing and shelter, medical care, appropriate education and supervision, and also prevention of any potential harm.

PHYSICAL ABUSE

Non-accidental behavior pattern which results in trauma or physical injury. There are many types of physical abuse which include pinching/punching, biting, hitting/beating, kicking, burning and so on.

SEXUAL ABUSE

Sexual abuse is using a child to satisfy sex drive when the child is not mature enough to give meaning and consent. It includes rape, molesting, exhibitionism, exposure a child to any visual or written material with sexually explicit content and having a child watch sexual intercourse.

EMOTIONAL ABUSE

Any act or behavior which hinders emotional integrity/well-being and personality development. Pretending not to notice child’s presence in an emotional basis, not showing affection like love, attention or affiliation also, any kind of verbal or behavioral contempt, rejection and accusation is considered as an emotional abuse.

SIGNS OF CHILD NEGLECT AND ABUSE

NEGLECT

“ If you suspect that a child is neglected, you should primarily focus on whether it is due to being unwanted by the caretakers or lack of required resources.”

PHYSICAL ABUSE

“Do not forget to evaluate the problem within a context! Evaluate the indicators within a child’s way of interpretation of his/her wounds, development, physical skills, and behavioral changes.”

SEXUAL ABUSE

“One of the most powerful indicators of sexual abuse is child’s statements. If he says he was sexually abused, take it seriously! Leave your doubts aside for the sake of child and protect.”

EMOTIONAL ABUSE

“It is difficult to doubt that emotional abuse exists since there is no sign of wound and bruise on child or he is fed and dressed properly. Also, the child who suffers from emotional abuse may think that this is normal and may not make any explanation about it.”
